Getting started

What is Tootac and how is it different from a normal dictionary?

Tootac is your personal language-learning companion, not just a dictionary. While a traditional dictionary only lets you look up definitions, Tootac lets you build your own vocabulary library, track which words you have learned, star the ones you want to focus on, and practice them through interactive games. Every word you add becomes part of a learning system designed to help you actually remember and use new vocabulary.

On which platforms is Tootac available (web, iOS, Android)?

Tootac is available as a web application that works in any modern browser on desktop, tablet, or mobile. Native apps for iOS and Android are available on the App Store and Google Play. Your account and vocabulary sync across all platforms.

How do I create an account and log in for the first time?

Click the Sign Up button on the homepage, choose a username, enter your email address, and create a password. Once registered, you can log in immediately and start adding words.

Do I need an account to save words or can I use it anonymously?

An account is required to save words, track progress, and use practice games. Creating an account is free and takes only a few seconds. Your data is tied to your account so it stays available whenever you log in.

Features and usage

How do I add a new word to my personal dictionary in Tootac?

On your homepage, use the Add word form at the top. Type the word you want to learn, and Tootac will automatically suggest a translation. You can edit the translation, select a part of speech (noun, verb, etc.), and optionally assign the word to one or more groups before saving.

How does automatic translation work when I add a word?

When you type a word, Tootac automatically fetches a translation based on your current learning language. The translation appears in the translation field after a brief delay. You can always edit it to match your preferred meaning or add context before saving.

Which languages are currently supported for learning and translation?

Tootac supports multiple languages. You can add and switch between languages in your account settings. The available languages are expanding regularly. Check the language selector in your profile to see the full list of currently supported languages.

How do I edit or delete words I have already added?

Click on any word in your list to open its detail page. From there you can edit the translation, pronunciation, or other details. To delete a word, use the delete action on the word's detail page. Deleted words are permanently removed from your vocabulary.

How do I search for words quickly by name or translation?

Use the search bar above your word list on the homepage. As you type, results are filtered in real time by both the word and its translation. You can also filter by starred status, learned status, or specific word groups to narrow results further.

How do I organize my words into groups?

Groups let you categorize vocabulary by topic, lesson, or any system that works for you. Create groups from the groups section, then assign words to one or more groups when adding them or from the word card. You can filter your entire word list by group to focus on a specific set of vocabulary.

How do I star words or mark them as learned?

Each word card has a star icon and a learned toggle. Tap the star to flag words you want to focus on — you can then filter your list to show only starred words. Mark a word as learned when you feel confident about it. Both statuses are saved instantly and can be changed at any time.

How does the game / practice mode work to help me remember vocabulary?

Tootac offers several practice modes. Select the translation shows a word and asks you to pick the correct translation from multiple choices. Select the word reverses the direction — you see the translation and choose the word. Type the answer asks you to type the correct translation from memory. The homepage also features a How Far You Can Go quick quiz to test your recall on the spot. Each word tracks a score based on your correct answers.

How can I track my learning progress over time?

Each word in your vocabulary has a score that reflects how often you have answered correctly in practice sessions. You can mark words as learned when you feel confident. Use the filter to view only learned or unlearned words and see which vocabulary still needs attention.

Learning Islands

What are Learning Islands?

Learning Islands are structured levels that guide you through language learning step by step. Each island contains topics with reading articles and interactive practice exercises. Think of them as a curriculum you progress through — complete the exercises on one island to unlock the next.

How do I access Learning Islands?

Go to the Learn section from the navigation bar. You will see a map of islands. The first island is always unlocked. Click on it to see its topics and start learning.

How do I progress from one island to the next?

Each island has topics, and each topic has required practice exercises. Complete all the required exercises on your current island to unlock the next one. Your progress is saved automatically so you can pick up where you left off.

What types of exercises do the islands contain?

Island exercises include single-choice questions, fill-in-the-blank answers, and ordering exercises. Some topics also include reading articles and embedded videos to build context before you practice. Each exercise has a pass score — reach it to mark the practice as completed.

Can I replay exercises I have already completed?

Yes. You can replay any exercise as many times as you like. Your best score is saved, so replaying is a great way to improve and reinforce what you have learned.

Are Learning Islands available for all languages?

Learning Islands are available for selected language pairs. If islands are not yet available for your current language, you will see a message letting you know. We are continuously adding content for more languages.

Do I need a premium subscription to access all islands?

The first island is free for all users. Islands beyond the first level may require a premium subscription. Check the subscription options on your profile page for details.

Are Learning Islands related to my personal word dictionary?

Learning Islands and your personal dictionary are separate features. Islands offer a structured curriculum with authored content and exercises, while the dictionary is your personal space to add, organize, and practice your own vocabulary. Both contribute to your overall language learning.

Accounts, subscription, and data

Is Tootac free to use, and are there premium features or subscriptions?

Tootac's core features — adding words, organizing groups, searching, and vocabulary practice quizzes — are free. A Pro subscription unlocks access to all Learning Islands and their structured exercises beyond the first introductory island. You can view subscription options on your profile page.

How do I manage my account settings?

Go to your profile page by clicking on your account in the navigation bar. From there you can manage your learning languages, set your translation language, and view your subscription status. To change your email address or password, please contact us at [email protected].

How can I reset my password if I forget it?

On the login page, click the password reset link (Forgot your password?). Enter the email address associated with your account and you will receive an email with a link to create a new password.

How is my data (saved words, translations, progress) stored and backed up?

All your data is stored securely on our servers. Your words, translations, scores, and group assignments are saved automatically as you use Tootac. Server backups run regularly to protect against data loss.

Can I export my word lists (e.g., to CSV, Anki, or another app)?

Word export functionality is on our roadmap. We plan to support CSV export and integration with popular flashcard apps like Anki. Stay tuned for updates on this feature.

Language content and quality

Where do the translations and definitions in Tootac come from?

Tootac uses a combination of third-party translation APIs and curated data to provide automatic translations when you add a word. The translations serve as a starting point — you can always edit them to better match your understanding or the specific meaning you want to remember.

What should I do if a translation or definition seems incorrect?

You can edit any translation directly on the word's detail page. Since translations are auto-generated, they may not always capture the exact nuance you need. We encourage you to refine translations to match your learning context. If you notice a systemic issue, please contact our support team.

Can I customize translations to fit my personal learning style, and will these changes sync across my devices?

Yes. Every translation you edit is saved to your account and will be available on any device where you log in. Your personal customizations are always preserved — Tootac never overwrites your edits with automatic translations.

Can I suggest new languages, features, or improvements to Tootac?

We welcome suggestions. Contact us at [email protected] with your ideas. User feedback directly shapes our development priorities.

Pronunciation and multimedia

Does Tootac provide audio pronunciation for words, and in which accents?

We do not provide built-in audio pronunciation at the moment. This feature is on our roadmap. In the meantime, you can use your device or browser’s text-to-speech or an external dictionary if you need to hear a word.

Are example sentences available for each word?

Example sentences are not available yet, but they are on our roadmap. We plan to show how each word is used in context to support your learning.

Can I add my own notes, example sentences, or tags to words?

You can organize words using groups (tags). On each word card, you can assign or remove groups. Custom notes and user-created example sentences are features we are considering for future updates.

Does Tootac support images or other media attached to vocabulary?

Yes. On a word's detail page, you can view and manage images associated with that word. Images can help create visual associations that strengthen memory retention.

Technical issues

The app or website is not loading properly; what should I do?
